Out of This World: from the Celestial to the Surreal

Celebrates Verdura’s 1941 Collaboration with Salvador Dali

Verdura is pleased to announce that it will return to TEFAF Maastricht, the world’s leading art fair, for a second year taking place in the Netherlands from March 10-19, 2017. Verdura will debut both new and vintage jewelry highlighting archival designs from the late 1930s and early 1940s. “We couldn’t be more excited to return to TEFAF Maastricht for our second year, presenting our finest works to the world’s most discerning audience of collectors,” commented Nico Landrigan, Verdura President.

Highlights from Verdura include jewels from the “Out of This World” Collection, celebrating the Duke’s 1941 collaboration with Surrealist artist Salvador Dali. The designs draw from elements of the original five jewels they created together, which debuted seventy-five years ago at The Museum of Modern Art as part of a Dali/Miro exhibition. Sharing a passion for mythology and the renaissance, this collaboration explored themes of love, loss and faith amidst the atrocity and devastation of WWII.

The Verdura Dogwood Pendant and Brooch Inspired by his 1941 collaboration with Salvador Dali, Duke Fulco di Verdura designed the Dogwood Brooch in 1943. In October of that same year it was featured in a surrealist Dali landscape.  The Dogwood pendant and brooch is a unique product of their collaboration as it does not feature one of Dali’s paintings but was rather the subject of one of them, blurring the lines between jewelry and art.

This Dogwood pendant and brooch was created using the same gemstone combination as the original:  four cabochon pink tourmalines, 296.90 carats, set in gold bezels as “petals,” and six faceted cushion-cut Ceylon yellow sapphires, 37.23 carats. Shown here on a gold “Tendril Knot” necklace chain.

VERDURA’S “FULCO BEFORE VERDURA” COLLECTION

SHOWCASES AT MASTERPIECE LONDON 2016

June 30 – July 6, 2016

New York, NY (June 2016): This summer, Verdura’s Fulco Before Verdura, A Tale of Two Citiescollection makes its international debut at Masterpiece London. This collection contrasts two chapters of Fulco di Verdura's work in the 1930s: his Byzantine-inspired work with Coco Chanel in Paris and his decidedly modern designs for Golden Age film stars in Hollywood.

One of the most important necklaces on view will be the yellow sapphire, yellow and white diamond “X” necklace that was over seven years in the making.  The design is based on an original design created for Betsey Whitney, wife of John Hay Whitney, the US Ambassador to the UK.  In addition, the new “Caned” cuff will be making its Masterpiece debut.  Its design is taken from a cigarette case commissioned by Cole Porter.  The legendary composer asked Fulco di Verdura to design the case after having admired the canned pattern on a custom Rolls Royce he discovered while visiting London.

Now in its sixth year, Masterpiece London is one of the leading international art and antiques fair and a highlight of the season for serious collectors. Masterpiece presents a snapshot of the history of art and design from antiquity to the present day.    The fair takes place from June 30 through July 6, on the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea SW3.

Verdura & Belperron to Exhibit for the First Time at TEFAF Maastricht 2016

Verdura & Belperron to Exhibit for the First Time at TEFAF Maastricht 2016

Highlighting masterwork from the Duke Fulco di Verdura and Suzanne Belperron

March 11-20, 2016

New York, NY (December 28, 2015):  Verdura and Belperron announced this month that it will exhibit for the first time at TEFAF Maastricht, the world’s leading art fair, taking place in the Netherlands from March 11-20, 2016.  In its debut year at TEFAF Maastricht, Verdura and Belperron will showcase both new and vintage jewelry highlighting each house’s signature design.  Also on display will be several pieces from their respective Museum Collections. “We couldn’t be more excited to be exhibiting at TEFAF Maastricht for the first time, presenting our finest works to the world’s finest audience of collectors,” commented Nico Landrigan, Verdura and Belperron President.

Highlights from Verdura include the special edition limited edition Theodora Cuff, recently introduced to mark Verdura’s 75th Anniversary.  Inspired by a Byzantine mosaic of Empress Theodora, Duke Fulco di Verdura’s iconoclastic motif represents his 1930 break from the status quo of platinum and diamond jewelry.  Verdura, with Coco Chanel as his muse, introduced this revolutionary design, gemstones pressed into yellow gold in splendid juxtaposition. A trio of large gems in high relief – 9 carat sapphire, 5 carat emerald and 5 carat amethyst - is set among 31 stones of every shape and color, on a hinged cuff of 18K gold and black enamel. Limited edition of 200; signed and numbered.

Highlights from Belperron include the Leaf Coronet Cuff.  From the vast design archive of Suzanne Belperron, the Leaf Coronet Cuff epitomizes Belperron’s pioneering aesthetic:  sensual, tactile and arrestingly modern. This diamond-studded platinum cuff reflects her signature sculptural style, with articulated, diamond-set rock crystal leaves arrayed to form a tribal coronet. Belperron became known for combining gemstones and precious metal without regard for their intrinsic value, focusing instead on the beauty of each combination. Asked why she never signed her work, she stated “My style is my signature.”

Two exceptional highlights from Verdura’s Museum Collection will be making their first-ever appearance on the Continent to mark Verdura’s debut at TEFAF in Maastricht:  the Byzantine Maltese Cross Cuffs, designed for Coco Chanel by Duke Fulco di Verdura circa 1930, and the exceptional cabochon ruby and diamond “Wrapped Heart” brooch.  The wrapped heart design was commissioned by Hollywood legend Tyrone Power, who asked the Duke to “gift wrap” his heart to give his wife Annabella on Christmas, 1941. The resulting “Wrapped” Heart Brooch design celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and endures as one of the most iconic pieces of Verdura’s collection.

With influential clients such as Elsa Schiaparelli, the Duchess of Windsor and Diana Vreeland, Belperron is widely recognized as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.  Asked why she never signed her jewelry, she replied “My style is my signature.”  Belperron LLC recently opened its first flagship salon in over forty years, featuring vintage Belperron jewels and new pieces created from her archive of over 9,200 designs.

Verdura Introduces

“Fulco Before Verdura, A Tale of Two Cities”

Holiday 2015 Collection

As a follow up to the highly successful anniversary celebrations and milestone New York retrospective exhibition, The Power of Style, Verdura at 75, Verdura presents its Holiday 2015 Collection, which delves deeper into the origins of the Duke Fulco di Verdura's design genius.

Fulco Before Verdura, A Tale of Two Cities contrasts two chapters of Fulco di Verdura's work in the 1930s: his Byzantine-inspired work with Coco Chanel in Paris and his decidedly modern designs for Golden Age film stars in Hollywood. The Holiday Collection will compare and contrast these two completely different periods which were only separated by a few short years in the 1930s.

The Holiday 2015 Collection features colorful Byzantine necklaces, earrings and bracelets and variations on Hollywood classics. A new introduction this Fall is the Topkapi cuff, inspired by the Byzantine architectural details of the Topkapi Palace. Verdura is also presenting a Curb-Link earring, a design originally made famous by Greta Garbo and an all-gold Lily bracelet, originally designed for Marlene Dietrich.

VERDURA’S 75th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION MAKES ITS INTERNATIONAL DEBUT

AT MASTERPIECE LONDON 2015

June 25 – July 1

Featuring the limited edition “Theodora” cuffs

New York, NY (June 15, 2015): This summer, Verdura’s 75th Anniversary Collection will make its international debut at Masterpiece London. This collection celebrates Duke Fulco di Verdura’s early work which was particularly noteworthy for its dramatic departure from the status quo in jewelry design. Babs Simpson, Vogue’s famed Fashion Editor, remarked, “Without question Verdura was a revolutionary, the one who changed everything.  Fulco made it all modern.”

Fulco di Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura, was an artist and a polymath. His life and work were defined by splendid contradictions: aristocratic but unpretentious, classic but revolutionary, cultivated but iconoclastic. He was a legend-maker in Paris, an image-maker in Hollywood and a style-maker in New York, always in the right place at the right time.

Inspired by the Byzantine mosaic of Empress Theodora at the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Fulco di Verdura and his muse, Coco Chanel, shattered the status quo in 20th Century jewelry design.  Pressing gemstones into yellow gold, the primary colors of rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds were electrified into new life against the vivid half-hues of amethysts, peridots, and tourmalines.  It was an iconoclastic departure from the reigning ubiquity of platinum and diamond jewelry.

Ward Landrigan and Nico Landrigan, Chairman and president of Verdura, a father and son team, are the stewards of Verdura’s legacy.  Working closely on the Anniversary collection for the past two years, they created a collection encapsulating Verdura’s unique style and rebellious creative spirit.

“Many of Verdura’s best known designs date from his early years when he first saw New York and its sophisticated style with fresh eyes” said Ward Landrigan. “However, many of his inspirations derive from his childhood in Sicily, his early career in Paris, and his extended summer holidays in Tuscany and the Mediterranean.  All these influences can be seen clearly leafing through his design archive.”
